A Washington state-based health care system is set to debut a breakthrough blood test called the novel Galleri blood test (GRAIL, Inc.), which according to developers could detect up to 50 different types of cancer form a SINGLE blood draw.
The GRAIL test (which is prescription only) is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer – specifically those over the age of 50. The test is intended to detect cancer signals and to predict where in the body the cancer signal is located.
The test will initially be used in Washington and Oregon, and it could eventually be available in states like Texas, Montana, and Alaska.

A couple things to note about this breakthrough test:
- The test is still considered to be in the clinical trial phase
- It does not detect ALL cancers and it should not replace regular cancer screenings
The news about this test is extremely positive and could very well be a breakthrough in how older adults treat cancer.
In the meantime, continue to adhere to any routine cancer tests or screenings with your doctor or oncologist – especially if you have a history of cancer or are high risk for cancer.
