According to research out of NYU’s College of Dentistry, having gum disease could signal that you’re at high risk of cognitive decline, since having “bad” bacteria associated with gum disease has been identified as a key biomarker for Alzheimer’s.
But what does gum health have to do with brain health?
It all boils down to inflammation – the root of all disease AND one of the main causes of Alzheimer’s.
You see, your mouth houses all sorts of bacteria – both good and bad. The ‘good’ bacteria in your mouth actually controls inflammation. But when you have gum disease, it creates an overload of ‘bad’ bacteria which in turn leads to chronic inflammation.
And this new study found that patients with higher levels of harmful mouth bacteria due to gum disease are more likely to have reduced levels of CSF amyloid (a protein that plays an essential role in overall brain growth and repair). This reduced amyloid level has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
In other words, taking care of your teeth and gums can ensure the right balance of mouth bacteria, which can help stave off Alzheimer’s!
