I’m talking about proton pump inhibitors, the “miracle” meds prescribed to help manage acid reflux and the uncomfortable (unbearable!) heartburn that occurs when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus.
They’re some of the most popular (and most-prescribed) meds on the planet – really impressive when you consider that they were only introduced in the late 1980s – but now, we know that they come with a dark side.
In the new study, published in Kidney International, researchers observed a cohort of 125,000 adult PPI users over five years…
And by the end, they saw that more than HALF developed chronic kidney disease.
Now, that’s not really surprising, because past research has linked PPIs to everything from dementia to heart disease to early death…
But here’s what’s worse.
NONE of these people showed evidence of acute kidney damage beforehand.
Usually, doctors expect to see a fixable warning sign before full-on kidney disease…
An immediate bodily response (nausea, decreased urination, swelling) in the first days or weeks after starting up on the Rx…
But this time? These THOUSANDS of times?
Almost like they were fine one day and DISEASE-STRICKEN the next…
And you or a loved one could be just as blind to your own risk.
That’s why it’s more important than ever that you speak to your doc about getting off these organ-killing meds as fast as you can.
He’ll never admit it, but most users don’t even need them.
For some, managing reflux and heartburn can be as easy as identifying discomfort-triggering foods – commonly spicy or acidic products like coffee, tomatoes, citrus, and alcohol – and avoiding them to limit flare-ups.
Mixing a daily brew of one teaspoon of baking soda (or apple cider vinegar) in a glass of water can help relieve symptoms further, as can limiting portion sizes and losing a little weight.
