At the end of the trial, all participants were given PET scans to measure metabolic changes in their brains.
The placebo group experienced severe metabolic decline in critical parts of the brain affected by the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

Those in the grape group not only maintained healthy metabolic activity in these vital parts, but they also saw metabolic improvements in other brain regions linked to better working memory and cognition.
While it remains unclear why grapes have such a profound effect on the brain, scientists suspect it’s because of their polyphenol content.
Grape polyphenols, like resveratrol, have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may increase blood flow to the brain and fight oxidative stress.
This study didn’t specify if they used green or red grapes, but red grapes and red wines typically have higher levels of resveratrol.
