[Study] Eye Surgery ‘STOPS’ Dementia? Not So Fast…
Taking care of your eyes is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health – no matter what stage of life you are in.
And this is especially true as you age.
Staying on top of your eye health and visiting your eye doctor on a consistent basis is the best way to help identify age-related eye conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts that may require procedures and surgery to help correct them.
And if you can believe it, a massive mainstream study has recently found that getting cataract surgery can reduce your risk of DEMENTIA!
On the surface, that sounds like a pretty good reason to go under the knife, right?
Well, I’m here today to tell you that despite this latest news about your eyes and your memory, you may need to pump the brakes.
According to a new study recently published in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal, cataract surgery could help provide seniors with protection against dementia.
Researchers studied more than 3,000 adults over 65 and found that those who had undergone cataract surgery had a nearly 30% lower risk of developing dementia from any cause compared with those who did not.
Cataracts and cataract surgery are very common in older adults. In fact, studies have found that more than half of all Americans over the age of 80 have cataracts or cataract surgery.

Skeptical? See the evidence here.
BUT, this doesn’t mean that surgery is a slam-dunk treatment for your cataracts – and it’s certainly not an ideal path to help your memory!
First, cataract surgery comes with all kinds of risks and complications such as infection, swelling, drooping eyelid, glaucoma, and even retinal detachment!
That alone is reason enough to be skeptical of surgery!
Second, there are less invasive ways to help keep your eyes healthy. Getting routine eye exams are the best way to stay on top of your eye health. Studies have also found that eye-friendly vitamins such as lutein and zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, to reducing the risk of serious eye diseases… including cataracts.
Finally, while there’s no cure for dementia, there are plenty of ways to help stave off this memory-altering disease without resorting to eye surgery. Multiple studies have found that changes in your diet – like eliminating unhealthy sugars – and increasing your physical activity can help reduce the risk of dementia.
However, if you do have a history of dementia in your family, it’s best to have a conversation with your doctor about a prevention plan that’s right for you.
