See, researchers are crediting these anti-MCI effects to an amino acid called ergothioneine which has been reported to have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Our bodies don’t produce it, so we can only get it through diet – and according to a 2016 study in Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, deficiency is a risk factor for neurodegeneration.

Thankfully, most edible fungi contain this important nutrient in spades, and while only four distinct varieties – oyster, golden, shiitake, and white button mushrooms – were referenced in the study, researchers expect that others would behave similarly.

And they’re all pretty easy to come by!

Availability in your area may vary, but most grocery stores include mushrooms with their produce section. If yours doesn’t, head to the inner aisles, where they’re probably sold dried or canned.

Since each flavorful fungus packs a different taste and texture, you can easily fit a little mushroom into any meal.
