In a just-out study, published in The British Medical Journal, researchers analyzed survey results from almost 100,000 Japanese adults (aged 45 to 74 years old) and followed-up with them for close to 15 years.
The surveys asked about dietary habits, lifestyle, and health status, and the researchers used local registries to identify any deaths within that time…
And amazingly, folks who ate the most fermented soy were 10 percent less likely to die!
Now, I know what you might be thinking. “Fermented soy” doesn’t exactly sound delicious (let alone popular), but that’s where you’d be wrong.
Fermented soy products, such as natto (sticky, slimy fermented soy beans) and miso (a flavor-packed paste made with soy beans) are wildly popular in East Asian countries such as Japan, where they’re traditionally served with rice and vegetables.
If you’re a fan of takeout, you might recognize miso as the main ingredient in miso soup, which is made with broth and regional vegetables – and natto may ring a bell for other reasons.

In the new study, folks who consumed unfermented soy products did not see the same effects.
