For the study researchers from Northwestern University split 20 healthy adults into two groups.
One group slept in total darkness, and the other slept in a dark with a light source similar to a t.v. or tablet.
Both groups slept in these rooms for three days and two nights. All participants had eight hours of sleep time each nights. Melatonin and blood sugar samples were collected during the nights.
