When you’re dealing with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you never know what to expect.
One minute, you’re straining to “go” … and the next, you’re running for the nearest toilet, feeling like you’re ready to explode.
And when you’re not rushing to the bathroom, you’re in agony from the constant cramping and bloating associated with IBS.
But you’re not alone…
In fact, nearly four in 10 adults across the globe battle some type of gastrointestinal disorder. You read that correctly… 40% of the adult in the world are dealing with some kind of intestinal distress!
And IBS is one of the biggest – and nastiest – culprits. IBS is the most common disease diagnosed by gastroenterologists and one of the most common disorders seen by primary care physicians.
In the United States, it is estimated that 10-15% percent of the adult population suffers from IBS symptoms, yet only 5-7% of adults have been diagnosed with the disease.
In other words, there are hundreds of thousands of folks out there that are suffering from IBS… and they don’t even know they have it!
So how do you squash the pain and agony of IBS without risky and expensive prescriptions?
Thankfully there are a number of natural supplements out there that calm your gut and can be seamlessly incorporated into your daily routine.
First and foremost, if you suffer from any kind of gastrointestinal disorder – especially IBS – you want to start with a healthy, gut-friendly diet.

Eliminate foods high in sugar, artificial sweeteners, and saturated and trans-fat. These include junk foods like ready-made cookies, frozen pizza, margarine, and even microwave popcorn.
Dairy products can also be a trigger for IBS. If you haven’t already, consider swapping some dairy products for some tasty, non-dairy alternatives.
For instance, if you like cream or half-and-half in your daily coffee, try using almond milk. Trust me, you won’t be able to taste the difference.
Diet is key, but probiotic supplements are also great. But not just any probiotics…
If you’re battling IBS, a probiotic supplement with a combination of lactobacillus and bifidobacterial is best (just be sure to check the label).
You also want to make sure the supplement has a minimum of 10 billion colony-forming units per capsule and look for a supplement that is enteric coated, which helps ensure the capsules will survive the trip to your small intestine. Otherwise, stomach acid can kill off the good bacteria before they get there, negating their effectiveness.
Many health food stores and online retailers sell a number of probiotics designed to target IBS.
