For the recent study, researchers gave 10 obese volunteers smoothies containing 48g (a handful) of walnuts for five days.
On the fifth day of the trial, researchers scanned the participants’ brains while showing them pictures of desirable foods like burgers and desserts, as well as pictures of healthier choices like fruits and veggies.
When the participants were shown pictures of junk foods, the researchers observed a special part of the brain, called the insula, which encourages healthy eating choices, “light up” with activity.
