Heartburn Meds Causing Deadly Infection (Seniors Beware)
If you’ve ever suffered from acid reflux or heartburn, you already know how miserable it can be.
The burning pain, indigestion and bloating are excruciating.
So your doc probably has you on a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) like Prilosec and Prevacid — assuring you that they’re perfectly safe for long-term use.
But they’re not.
Because British researchers have just discovered that these drugs come with a very serious — and often deadly — side effect.
Especially if you’re over the age of 65.
For decades, PPIs have been damaging your heart and kidneys. But now it looks like these dangerous drugs could be setting you up for a deadly infection.
I’m talking about pneumonia. This deadly lung infection kills about 50,000 Americans every year, 90% of which are seniors.
Even the slightest increase in pneumonia risk could be lethal for you or a loved one. And that’s exactly the trouble with PPIs.
In a recent study, researchers from the University of Exeter analyzed the medical records of 75,050 elderly patients over a two-year period.
At the end, they found that folks taking PPIs for at least a year significantly increased their risk of developing pneumonia.
However, participants who didn’t take PPIs saw ZERO increase in their pneumonia risk.
Experts report that PPIs cause pneumonia because they neutralize stomach acid — a strong barrier against pneumonia and other infections.
And the worst part? Scientists estimate that 85% of people on PPIs don’t actually need them.
So it’s probably time that you talk to your doctor about how to get off of them.
