Because brand-new research out of the University of Minnesota has just revealed that while you’ve been busy playing brain games, ANOTHER ORGAN has been upping your risk of life-ruining dementia…
And you probably haven’t thought twice about it.
I’m talking about your lungs.
In the study, which started all the way back in 1987, researchers tested the lung function of 14,000 middle-aged adults and followed them over next 23 years – paying special attention to how those with reduced lung ability fared later in life.
And here’s where things start to get scary…
They found that people with a history of obstructive lung disease are a whopping 33 PERCENT more likely to develop dementia!
But, unfortunately, that’s still the BEST-CASE scenario.
For people with restrictive lung disease– which prevents the organ from fully expanding when you inhale – that risk increase spikes even higher.
To an unbelievable 58 PERCENT.
Experts say that’s likely because low blood oxygen levels caused by difficulty breathing or restricted airflow within the body triggers inflammation.
And as I’ve shared before, inflammation has been tied to everything from joint pain to heart disease to cancer.
In this case, it harms blood vessels in the brain – leading to the kind of damage that’s been linked to dementia.
But don’t worry.
Saving your lungs – and sparing our brain – is as easy as taking three simple steps.
- Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes is the best and easiest way to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which drastically impairs lung function. Quit immediately and without relying on nasty e-cigs or mainstream aids. (Ginseng and acupuncture can help curb cravings naturally.)
- Look for a supplement. Honokiol (from the magnolia tree) has been shown to decrease tumor activity and metastasis in lung cancer patients, while the anti-oxidant blend N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) may reduce obstructions like phlegm and mucus in people with COPD and help prevent loss of lung function. Look for them online or at your local vitamin shop.
- Exercise. Brisk daily movement can help increase lung capacity and improve general function, strengthening the organ against disease and breathing disorders.
