Because a brand-new study published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience shows that all you have to do to keep a young, healthy brain is dance.

It’s no secret that physical activity is key to staving off memory problems, but this is the first study to show that dancing could be the most effective form of exercise.

For the research, German scientists recruited 62 participants aged around 68 and assigned them to either a traditional exercise group or a dancing group for 18 months.

Over the course of the trial, the folks in the dance group learned four different types of dances while the exercise group’s activities remained the same.

At the end of the trial, the researchers found that folks in the dancing group had a larger hippocampus, the part of the brain related to memory. Having a healthy, plump hippocampus is the key to stopping dementia, Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss.

Even better, it also helped improve the participants’ balance.
