In the study, published in the Journal of Gerontology Series A, researchers from King’s College London instructed 40 adults to drink either one beverage containing 200 grams of blueberries or a placebo every day for one month.
To measure the subjects’ heart health, the researchers kept tabs on chemicals in their blood and urine, monitored their blood pressure, and measured flow-mediated dilation (how arteries expand when blood flow increases)…
And the results were just SPECTACULAR.
Participants who consumed the blueberry drink not only saw immediate improvement in blood vessel function, but their blood pressure dropped an AMAZING 5mmHg on average – comparable to what you’d expect from a mainstream heart med!
(Without risky or uncomfortable side effects…)
Plus, the researchers went even further, concluding that these impressive heart-health benefits came from naturally occurring compounds called anthocyanins, which give fruits like raspberries and blueberries their distinct colors.
And that makes PERFECT sense given what else we know about these antioxidants – namely, that they help REIN IN the free radicals that cause oxidative damage throughout your body, impairing your heart and other systems related to blood flow.
So, it’s never been more important that you up your intake.
As I mentioned before, colorful red, blue, and violet berries are LOADED with helpful anthocyanins – so make sure to pick some up during your next grocery run.
To achieve results comparable to those seen in the study, you’ll want to eat close to 200 grams (about two cups) per day, but don’t forget: Not all berries are created equal.
Each year, the Environmental Working Group releases its Dirty Dozen list of fruits and vegetables with the most pesticide residue – and unfortunately, berries have made the cut more than once.
Strawberries are typically the worst variety (taking the No. 1 spot in 2018), but for optimal health benefits and reduced risk of residue, spend a few extra cents and get your berries organic.
Even when they don’t make the Dirty Dozen, certain berries’ thin skin means they’re still easily contaminated.
