It’s official. A vaccine to help stop the coronavirus is on its way… and could be distributed to millions of Americans in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, it still means things like social distancing… wearing masks… handwashing… and the frequent use of hand sanitizer will continue to be our standard protocol against the virus.
But as a reader of Turapür Today, you already know that certain hand sanitizers AREN’T SAFE.
Over the past few months, I’ve told you specifically what ingredients to look for, what brands to stay away from, and how to make wise choices to stay safe in the coronavirus era.
But today, I’m here to give you a NEW, breakthrough update about hand sanitizer safety.
Here’s the latest…
According to a research study from Brigham Young University in Utah, alcohol-free hand sanitizer is just as effective at killing the coronavirus as alcoholic gels.
Researchers exposed samples of the coronavirus to benzalkonium chloride, a common ingredient in alcohol-free hand sanitizers. They also tested several other compounds found in disinfectants.
Virtually every time, these substances killed 99.9 percent of the virus within 15 seconds!
In other words, you don’t need to limit yourself to just alcoholic sanitizing gels.
But it still means you need to exercise caution and read the ingredient label when shopping for hand sanitizer.
Why, exactly?
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they’ve seen a sharp INCREASE in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) … but tested positive for methanol CONTAMINATION.

And that’s bad news for your health…
Methanol, or wood alcohol, is TOXIC when absorbed through your skin… and even life-threatening when ingested.
According to the FDA, methanol is NOT an acceptable active ingredient for hand sanitizers and must NOT be used due to its toxic effects.
I know that hand sanitizer can be in short-supply and high-demand these days… but the first thing you should do is verify if the brand you’re currently using contains methanol.
Luckily the FDA has a comprehensive list of all hand sanitizer brands that:
- Have been tested and found to contain methanol…
- Are being recalled by the manufacturer or distributor…
- And are purportedly made at the same facility as products that the FDA found to contain methanol.
If the brand you are using is on this list… THROW IT OUT and take extra steps to wash your hands more frequently.
If it’s not… you’re in the clear and it’s safe to use the hand sanitizer as-needed.
