Researchers now say that just a 5 mmHg rise in blood pressure increases the risk of death from heart attack or stroke by 25%. They now conclude that the odds of having hypertension were 22% higher for patients with moderate to severe periodontitis and a whopping 49% higher for patients with severe periodontitis.
If that’s not enough to send you running to grab your toothbrush or floss, I don’t know what is!

Your first weapon against gum disease is getting ‘back to basics.’ You know, the stuff your dentist has nagged you about for years.
There’s no substitute for optimal oral hygiene and gum health like brushing at least twice daily, and flossing on a regular basis.
Also, make sure to replace your toothbrush on a regular basis. I replace mine at least every three months and I opt for toothbrushes that have soft or extra-soft bristles.
There are also a TON of foods out there (delicious ones, too) that are good for your teeth and gums.
Fiber-rich fruits like apples, bananas, oranges, and strawberries help keep your teeth and gums clean. About 20 minutes after you eat something that has sugars or starches, your saliva begins to reduce the effects of the acids and enzymes attacking your teeth.
Cheese is another saliva maker. The calcium in cheese, and the calcium and phosphates in milk and other dairy products, help put back minerals your teeth might have lost due to other foods. They also help rebuild tooth enamel.
