In the study, published in Neurology, researchers reviewed data from 2,231 dementia-free middle-aged adults involved in the famous Framingham Heart Study (a long-term, multi-generational evaluation of heart health in and around Framingham, Massachusetts).
In addition to having heart risks and other parameters studied, these participants had all undergone cognitive tests of memory, perception, and attention – even MRIs to measure varying aspects of white and gray matter in the brain.
And this is where things start to get interesting…
Because researchers saw that high levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) correlated with WORSE memory and visual perception…
Indicating that being STRESSED OUT may CAUSE cognitive impairment!
But just wait…
It gets WORSE.
According to the data, adults with high cortisol also showed lower brain volume…
AKA SMALLER BRAINS!
Yup, those of us in the business refer to that cranial loss as “brain shrinkage,” and while it may occur naturally as we age, you want to do everything in your power to slow it down…
Because shrinkage makes it harder to take in new information, interfering with your thinking and even leading to symptoms of dementia.
Fortunately, though, this study also implies that there’s a simple way to TURN OFF that brain drain.
All we have to do is calm down.
See, when we’re stressed out – be it from money struggles, family conflicts, or just daily life – our adrenal glands release cortisol to aid a fight-or-flight response.
That’s something our hunter-gatherer ancestors relied on for survival, but now… it can wreak havoc on our bodies, affecting our brains and upping our risk of deadly heart conditions.
In a perfect world, we could all avoid spiked cortisol by dodging or defusing triggering situations… but for many people, avoiding stress isn’t an option.
