In fact, it’s been well-documented that seniors who made it a habit to take an afternoon nap had better recall and thinking than those who didn’t.
And according to new research, afternoon naps not only clear your mind… they can also help fend off DEMENTIA!
The new study, published in the online journal General Psychiatry, found that participants over the age of 60 who took regular afternoon naps had better verbal fluency, locational awareness, and working memory over the long haul compared to those who didn’t stop for a brief shut-eye.
Not only did the ‘nappers’ have better overall mental acuity, but when given a dementia screening test, their scores were SIGNIFICANTLY better than the ‘non-napping’ group.

A study from Johns Hopkins found that 30- to 90-minute naps in older adults have brain benefits, BUT, anything longer than an hour and a half could create problems with cognition.
The reason is, resting too long during the day messes with the sleep you get at night. And this poor-quality nighttime sleep can lead to cognitive problems.
So instead, aim for that golden 30 to 90 minute “sweet spot” when you get your midday reboot.
The research also suggests that the best time for older adults to nap is between 1 and 4 p.m.
So, if you don’t already, be sure to add a nap (but not too long!) to your daily routine to keep dementia at bay.
