I’ll tell you how it’s possible in just a second, but first, we need to talk about how and why your heart risk shoots so high.
In a study presented at the Radiological Society of North America conference late last year, researchers reviewed the data of nearly 5,000 adults with diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), self-reported snoring, or neither and analyzed that info against MRI chest scans.
Now, if you’re not familiar with OSA, it’s the most common form of sleep apnea, a condition where your throat muscles over-relax and block important airways while you sleep – often marked by alternating periods of not breathing and loud snoring.
And along with the snorers, OSA sufferers’ MRIs revealed MAJOR strain on the heart!
Compared to the control group, members of the snoring and OSA groups showed an increased in left ventricular mass, which means that the walls of the heart’s main pumping area were enlarged…

And that, in turn, can lead to the kind of strain that causes loss of function later in life.
Experts say this may result from reduced oxygen circulation during sleep, which has previously been associated with higher blood pressure – itself a risk factor for larger heart problems.
What’s more, the OSA group was much smaller (just 118 people) than the snoring group (1,886), but the two yielded such similar results that researchers argue sleep apnea may be wildly under-diagnosed.
So, it’s more important than ever that you get help – and get it fast – BEFORE your heart is on the line.
Some people have reported less snoring if they sleep on their side — and you should ABSOLUTELY quit smoking. Cigarettes wreak havoc on your lungs AND your throat, inflaming and narrowing air pathways.
If you’re worried about apnea, ask a spouse or loved one to observe you while you sleep for a few nights. If they spot any recurring issues, consider finding a sleep lab that can advise you on what to do next.
And now that it’s 2019, why not give the old weight-loss resolution a try? With OSA, higher body weight can mean even tighter constricted airways, but shedding a few pounds can help re-open those passages.
