5 Drugs That Kill Your Sex Drive

When it comes to sex, lots of us go through our 20s like the Energizer Bunny.

But once we hit our 50s and 60s, it can feel like the batteries have finally worn out.

It’s easy to dismiss low sex drive as a part of aging… but in lots of cases, there’s much more going on.

You see, there are five types of drugs that are known to absolutely destroy your sex life.

And if you can get these five meds out of your life, you may be on your way to enjoying the type of sexual desire you haven’t felt in years.

#1: Antidepressants

Mainstream medicine hands out selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft, like candy.

But the same neurotransmitters they affect also play a key role in sexual desire and performance. Anywhere from 30–80% of people on these drugs end up facing problems in the bedroom, research has shown.

#2: Allergy meds

Antihistamine drugs like Benadryl have been linked to a loss of sex drive. The effect is supposed to be temporary, but it’s not that simple.

If you suffer from bad allergies, you may be taking these drugs nearly daily for months at a time. You’re talking about a major hit to your sex life, and you may never even realize that your medications are causing it.

#3: Beta blockers

Drugs for high blood pressure are notorious for killing your sex drive — and, in fact, beta blockers come with a laundry list of other side effects like dizziness, weakness, fatigue and diarrhea (none of which is great for a healthy sex life).

Some of the more common beta blockers on the market include acebutolol (Sectral),
atenolol (Tenormin), bisoprolol (Zebeta) and metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol-XL).

#4: Opioid painkillers

This is another class of drugs that the mainstream is prescribing like crazy for every ache and pain. In fact, the overprescription of opioids like Vicodin and OxyContin has become a national epidemic.

But in addition to making you feel like a zombie, opioids can lower your testosterone levels. And nothing kills sex drive faster than low T.

#5: Benzos

Benzodiazepine drugs like Xanax and Valium are often given to help with anxiety. But as with opioids, they can leave you feeling like a zombie and can destroy your sex drive.

Plus, major medical groups have advised against prescribing benzos to many seniors at all, because their side effects and risks often outweigh their benefits.
